Each one channels a different aspect of how the season actually feels when you strip away the commercial shine and get to the specific, lived-in moments that make December matter.

This is what a compilation does that individual releases can’t: it lets all the Rodeo Reverb personas occupy the same space, the same December, the same stretch of desert highway decorated with lights. Different eras and styles coexisting in the high desert air, the way they always have out here.

The Tracks

Comfort and aftermath: Mariachi Sleepover opens with “The Night After Thanksgiving”—that quiet moment when extended family has left and you’re sitting with the people who know you best. Gentle acoustic guitar, room-tone warmth, the particular comfort of annual traditions.

Grit and honesty: Ranchos Crucifixion brings “Children of Meager Beginnings,” because not every holiday memory is wrapped in abundance. Raw grunge approach for the truth that Christmas isn’t universal joy for everyone.

Strange magic: Great Western Groove Collective (their Solid Soul Wrestling era) contributes “Where the Snowflakes Start,” about those temporary installations with their strung lights transforming parking lots into something almost sacred.

Pure nostalgia: Breeze Bros. delivers “Tree Cakes,” a love letter to Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes. Crunchy 90s boom-bap drums and vinyl crackle, celebrating the absurdly sweet snacks that somehow taste like childhood.

Drunk gratitude: Great Western and Eddie Lamont give us “Hold Me Close (This Christmas Night)”—early-70s Vegas sound in full effect. Casino lounges at 2 AM when everyone’s a little drunk and grateful for whoever’s nearby.

Desert sunset: The mixtape closes with Mariachi Sleepover’s “We Wish You A Mariachi Christmas”—dusty, tape-warm, like it’s playing from an old transistor radio. Lo-fi psychedelic folk meeting mariachi brass, wishing everyone warmth through winter.

What Makes It Work

The tracks were created with AI-assisted composition that lets me channel these different eras and styles without pretending I’m physically in a 1973 recording studio or a 1995 home setup. The technology becomes another instrument for capturing the specific texture of how these moments in music history feel.

The whole mixtape has that texture of something made for the label family first. No commercial polish, no attempt to sound like modern holiday radio. Just six perspectives on what December feels like when you’re building your own traditions, remembering childhood, or finding warmth in unexpected places.

Sometimes the best way to celebrate a season is to acknowledge all its textures: the comfort and the loneliness, the abundance and the scarcity, the traditions worth keeping and the new ones worth building.

You can stream the full Holiday Mixtape on all platforms now. Search for ‘Holiday Mixtape Rodeo Reverb Records’. Each track channels a different corner of the Rodeo Reverb universe, but they all share that desert quality—sun-bleached, time-shifted, honest about sentiment without drowning in it.

Stay warm out there.

—Josh / Rodeo Reverb Records

Listen: Holiday Mixtape on all platforms

More: rodeoreverbrecords.com

Tape Drift is a reader-supported publication. This isn't one of them. This one found me.

In July of this year, 2025, while visiting family, I found myself in a dusty storage unit in Santa Barbara looking at an abandoned 1990 Mitsubishi Delica van. My cousin had been gifted the unit, thinking it just held old camping gear. But on the passenger seat, there was a shoebox filled with unlabeled TDK cassette tapes and a few VHS tapes.

This Substack, and the podcast it holds, is the beginning of an audio exhibit dedicated to these tapes. They are the last known artifacts of a musician known only as "Drift Harper," who spent a single, transformative summer in the forgotten coastal town of Port Meridian in 1995 before vanishing.

In this first episode, I tell the story of that discovery and play the very first sounds I heard from the tapes—the beginning of a story that's been waiting three decades to be told. Together, we're going to piece together a portrait of an artist from the only thing he left behind: his voice, his music, and the sounds of his world.

The exhibit is open. The tapes are waiting to be heard.

From the Archives: The Sun-Baked Grit of Mariachi Sleepover's "Greatest Hits"

A deep dive into the Rodeo Reverb archives with Mariachi Sleepover's impossibly titled 1995 debut. A recording so improbable, so perfectly out-of-step with its own time, that it feels less like an accident and more like a premonition. This is one of those times.

Today, we’re dusting off a cassette from the Rodeo Reverb Records vault: the late 1995 debut from a band called Mariachi Sleepover (Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music).

Their sound is a study in contrasts: rough-edged, fuzzy guitars hang in the air like smoke, only to be cut through by the mournful sound of a mariachi trumpet. It’s the sound of Mid/Southwestern slackerdom, a vibe made for porches and basements, not A&R reps. In short, they were the perfect flagship act for a label built on defiant storytelling.

The most audacious thing about them? They titled their debut EP Greatest Hits. It was a brilliant, tongue-in-cheek parody of rock star ego from a band that had never released a single note. Originally passed around on a lo-fi cassette at South Campus house parties, it felt more like a prank than a proper album. But listening to it now, it feels like a time capsule from an era when music could be this wonderfully weird and unfiltered.

While the entire EP is a gem, the opening track, “All-Time Classic,” is the masterpiece, all irony aside. It opens with a swaggering, dusty riff that parodies rock greatness while accidentally achieving a version of it. It's a mission statement, but beneath the smirk, the track lands with a surprising emotional weight. The weary, urgent vocals, the sincere lyrics, and that mournful, plaintive trumpet come together to create something far more profound than the joke suggests. It's a perfect encapsulation of the band's core appeal: melancholic, raw, and defiant. Tracks like the startlingly sincere "Scarlet Bloom" and the chaotic, essential "Porch Anthem '95" are fantastic in their own right, but "All-Time Classic" is where the band's entire ethos crystallizes.

Attached, you’ll find a scan of the original cassette J-card—a perfect artifact of the label's DIY mythos. You can almost smell the tape deck it lived in.

While Mariachi Sleepover would go on to release louder and more focused albums like Fourth-and-Dissonant, this first, strange release set the tone. It was a blueprint for what lo-fi can be when it stops trying to be cool and just tries to feel something.

Greatest Hits is the sound of a band that didn’t care what scene they were in, because they were the scene.

From the cult classics of Rodeo Reverb to the central mystery of Drift Harper, the search for lost music is ongoing. For the past few months, I’ve been working to piece together the story of a musician the locals called "Drift Harper," who spent the summer of 1995 in Port Meridian, CA recording an entire catalog's worth of beautiful, melancholic music before vanishing around Labor Day weekend of that year.

The audio tapes tell one story—a story of a young artist finding their voice, forging connections, and pushing against the quiet pressures of a small town's music scene. But there were other tapes in that box. A handful of VHS cassettes, unlabeled and degraded from years of heat and neglect.

The restoration has been a slow, painstaking process. Much of the music and footage is gone forever. But some moments survived—brief, sun-bleached fragments of that lost summer. Glimpses of the places he went, the people he knew, and the feeling of a world on the verge of a major change.

This is the first time I'm sharing any of the recovered video. It isn't a complete story, but rather a collection of feelings and questions captured on magnetic tape.

This is the world of The Sun-Bleached Tapes. I believe the answers to what happened to Drift Harper are hidden somewhere inside these frames.

Watch the teaser below and tell me what you see.
<div id="youtube2-i9JtGTbDFQc" We believe there’s something remarkable in every track, even if it took thirty years to find the right ears.

This is Tape Drift. A new investigation into the music that almost dis/appeared.

Our first series, The Sun-Bleached Tapes, begins with a discovery. In the summer of 2025, a collection of mysterious cassette and VHS tapes were found in an abandoned Mitsubishi Delica van. They are the complete works of a musician known only as "Drift Harper," who, apparently, spent a transformative summer in a forgotten coastal California town in 1995 before vanishing completely.

What happened to him? And what’s on the tapes?

We’re going to find out. We'll be piecing together the story, digitizing the recordings, and sharing the investigation with you every step of the way.

The tapes are waiting. The story is ready to be told.

Subscribe now to be the first to hear what we’ve found.

Launching Soon.

Subscribe now
